Black Hat SEO

By Neel at 2010-02-08 05:36:34
Search engines are not infallible. We have all, at some point in our searching lives, found a link on the web that seemed interesting or helpful but when clicked were disappointed to find that the destination page was rubbish. Not only is it frustrating but a complete waste of time.

Technologies are being upgraded on a day to day basis and search engine giants such as Google / Yahoo / MSN are finding new ways to cut the clutter of spam websites. The day is not far when the websites that try and spam their way out high SERPS will find themselves out of the search engine results.

Internet marketers call safe, non-manipulative techniques White Hat SEO, while less reputable methods are referred to as Black Hat techniques. Some examples of White Hat SEO include optimizing META tags, putting keywords in URLs, submitting sites to directories, making sitemaps, obtaining links on related sites, and creating keyword-optimized content. These techniques help search engines locate relevant pages people are looking for. Search engines encourage such methods through services like Google Webmaster Tools.

Keyword stuffing can be achieved in a number of ways. It is an unethical technique of using tags such as Meta-tags, Alt tags and title tags to stuff with your target keywords. Search engines reads these tags and can help to indicate what a page is about, however, if you stuff your tags with keywords, and the search engines find out, then this can cause your site to be banned.

Spamming the weblogs and forums doesn't work in the long run. It cannot be called regular link building method. Most of these links will be deleted in a few hours or days. Good forums have moderators who can delete spam very quickly. Weblog comments are usually moderated so the spam will never appear on the site. And most of the blogs which are not moderated have nofollow attribute. It means the links from such websites are ignored by search engines.

Because of the fierce competition in the industry, some search engine optimization firms began using tactics that the search engines have labeled as "black-hat", or "illegal", in the search engine world. The "Big 3" (Google, Yahoo, and MSN) have all issued rules and guidelines listing several of these black-hat tactics. Failure to comply with these guidelines will most likely get you de-indexed, or worse, banned from the search engines.

The Black hats SEO clan, instead, constantly looks for technical loopholes in the search engine algorithms to "game" the search engines, such as cloaking sites, nasty redirects, keyword stuffing and many others. When the search engines algorithms are reviewed, these site are very often kicked out of the index, but these black hat SEO experts simply get though this by searching for another loophole.
