A web directory could be likened to the traditional yellow phone book directory. With a web directory, you have a bunch of websites that are placed in various categories. When you click on the category page, you will have a list of websites. Each website will have a title that comes in the form of a link, and they will all have descriptions which tell you what the site is about. By reading these descriptions, you will be able to determine whether or not you're interested in visiting the website.
Directories that are created purely to sell links or get rankings are not worth joining. Having said that, I know that industry specific Directories can be good for a business, yet directories without any useful content are doomed to failure.
But again, webmasters got sneaky. With this trend, we began to see the evolution of "Link Farms" and "Free-for-All" (FFA) sites. These pages were essentially a gigantic collection of (often times) useless links. In most cases, the sites were not categorized or descriptive. They became a place for webmasters to dump their links in order to make their site appear more popular.
When link building became one of the key factors affecting the position and ranking of a website in search results pages, then some 'smart' websites started to offer link exchange services. As the name suggests link exchange services worked by exchanging links. Website A would link to website B in exchange for a link back to A. This method worked initially and this prompted some people to go one step ahead and start link farming.
Getting a new website indexed by Google used to be a task of Herculean proportions. Quite often new websites would languish in obscurity for ages, but those in the know realized that the process could be accelerated. By linking a new website to an established website or webpage with a high page rank (typically page rank (PR) 7 and above) that new website could be indexed by Google within days or a matter of hours depending on the PR value of the webpage on which the link was located.
Quality linking practices are encouraged by the major search engines as an acceptable way of improving site popularity, website traffic and help contribute to higher search engine rankings. As a webmaster you must be wary of engaging in poor linking practices that have the potential to strip your website of its ranking status on the major search engines Google, Yahoo and MSN.
There are many sites on the internet that exist for only one reason and that is to show webmasters how they can improve their search engine rankings by using SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques. I do not want to comment too much on SEO sites except to say that although there are some very good SEO sites on the net I have found most of them to have no value at all.
It is important to thoroughly check out the site before you try to get it to link to you. Links from sites that contain large numbers of outgoing links should be avoided; otherwise you may be penalized by the search engines for associating with a link farm.
